2024 Michter's Barrel Strength Rye Review

2024 Michter's Barrel Strength Rye Review

2024 Michter's Barrel Strength Rye, 110.4 proof
This might have one of the best noses on a rye I’ve ever had and as easily a contender for 2024 Rye of the year.
Nose - It has the perfect balance of sweetness and spice. Vanilla, brown sugar, caramel oak rye, spice, cinnamon, cinnamon red hots, cherries...almost reminds you of a pastry shop with confectioners' sugar, and some baked fruit pastry. You get some mint and maple as well as it gets some air. It’s really complex and inviting. I could come back to this glass all night and nose it and be happy.
Palate - On the front palate you get hit with all the rye spice, but the mid palate brings some chocolate malt.  A dash of water muted the nose a bit but really tamed the spice on the palate and brought out almost a peanut or hazelnut component.  It is a delicious whiskey and a whiskey where you should take your time with as there is a lot to unpack.
The finish is medium plus with a bit of that barrel strength hanging out.
The nose is the star of the show in my opinion. For those that like rye, this is a clear winner, and for those that don’t, it just might change your opinion on rye.
I will be revisiting this one but I would give this a 93/100.
Cheers!
